The Word Philes 6

The Word Philes

Today's episode of The Word Philes consists of a single entry on a blog. When I went looking for information on writing articles, for yesterday's post, this one came up.

It's one of those posts that's unusual because it was apparently written on the spur of the moment - hence the rather large number of errors in the text. The commenters on it are incredibly varied, too, ranging from those who found it useful to some who are downright insulting.

The post is titled How to Write Articles and Essays Quickly and Expertly. It's a couple of years old and is on the Half an Hour blog.

Read it. Even if you don't agree or think it's incomplete, it's a very interesting, detailed piece.

Today's entry in The Word Philes is a bit odd, because it's not really a pure text article. It is, however, a brilliant piece of work that deserves as much publicity as it can get, so it's with great pleasure that I'm doing my part. The article will be very interesting to many of us and also a great learning tool for any teachers out there.

Over at Wallstats, Jess posted A Visual Guide To The Financial Crisis back in December - someone just pointed it out to me today. Admittedly, it's a very simplified analysis - it has to be, given that it's only a couple of diagrams - but it shows how the US economy reached the point where it went into crisis.

Beautifully presented, clear and concise, it's a great piece of work and shows how a presentation should be done. Pop over and have a gander: definitely worth your time.

This week, The Word Philes looks at two examples of sales writing. Marketing is big business, especially on the Web: with so many different companies offering similar services, the ability to capture a reader's attention and spark interest in one or two paragraphs is critical.

Today I'm starting what will hopefully be a regular weekly post on Wordophilia: The Word Philes. Each week, I'll keep my eyes open for a particularly remarkable piece of writing and will review it here. It could be something terrible, interesting or wonderful: the entry will either be a bit of random promotion for some great work or a critique of mistakes to be avoided. In the latter case, the writer will, of course, remain anonymous!

The Word Philes series looks at pieces of writing: they may be good, they may be bad or they may just be interesting. The good and the interesting receive commentary and links to the original authors' sites, hopefully to help other writers or just to share something exceptional. The bad are analysed, to work out what we should learn to avoid, and thus improve our writing.
