Blog Me A Job

Crack the whip!

Just a very quick post today to point all the freelancers out there to two more sites recently recommended to me by an online contact.

Many of you are aware of GetAFreelancer, where I have picked up a job or two in the past. The two new sites to which I have been pointed are in a similar vein, being posting places for independent work opportunities. Bizarrely, they both have entry tests to activate a new account, requiring an understanding of how they work.

First off, there's Elance, which hosts an enormous number of projects. It appears to be slightly different to GAF, in that every project goes through the site's payment system, rather than just acting as a free middle-man service. This ensures that far fewer scams escape attention, but it does mean that a percentage of earnings - up to 6% - are lost in site fees.

Secondly, there's Guru, which feels very similar to Elance. Again, a huge amount of work is posted on the site, but the fees are a little higher. They run up to 10%, depending on the project, with all payments going through the site.

Both sites are apparently legitimate, though I have not tried them myself just yet. Those links are direct, not referrals.

Incidentally, GAF's been getting a lot more blog work recently and is definitely worth keeping an eye on if you're looking for a few extra bucks. Though it pays the lowest of the three for projects, it can be a neat way to build an online reputation.

Helium Frenzy

Helium

I was going to continue the Blogging Basics series today or post another Word Phile, but by chance I was at Helium (where I've been slacking badly, I have to admit). They have a couple of major opportunities running that I wanted to shout about to all you authors in need of some reputation or cash. Can't have you missing these!

The first is a joint venture with the Connecticut Post. Helium want people to join their debate over the question of control of parish finances. The article title can be found by going here. The top-rated article will be published in the Post itself, which will make a nice bit of publicity for whoever submits it!

Secondly, they have a new competition starting next Monday 16 March. This one's in conjunction with ResponsibilityProject.com and promises seven prizes: $100 for first place, $50 for second and five $25 awards for equal-third placers. The good thing about this one is that the fifteen titles open for submission will all be about everyday moral choices - something pretty much all of us can write to, instead of all those specialist legal things their Marketplace has!

So, get your writing muscles flexed and ready. Put the brain in gear, snap on your seatbelt and zoom over there right now!

Thanks to everyone who wished me a speedy recovery yesterday (or early this morning). General Vit C's counter-attack on the Evil Head Cold's troops appears to have had reasonable success and I'm a lot better today!
