Wordophilia - April 2009

Return To Sender

April 29th 2009 18:06
After a great deal of effort, a good slapping for an online freelancing site and an interminable wait, I'm finally able to announce the new home of Wordophilia. Yes, I'm moving. I'm afraid all the back-biting annoyed the hell out of me and, particularly since this domain name is a threatened entity, I figured I'd shuffle away sooner rather than later.

Qwerk.com is staying.

Anyway, for anyone interested, I will now be posting over at ScrawlBug, my own domain.

Absence

Yes, I've not been around for a while. Why?

Things like this comments thread and this whole pointless load of childishness (not Damo's post, but the crap that caused it).

Maybe I'll be back some time when people have grown up. We'll see.

Scribophile

I've been keeping half an eye on this site for a little while now. I heard about it from a fellow MyLotter and it struck me that it was somewhat similar to the Authonomy site that Moonglow posted about.

Changes

April 12th 2009 22:59
A short pause today, while I redesign the site a bit. Hope you like the new look: the old one was a bit too boring for my liking.

I've also taken some time to sit and think about the purpose of Wordophilia as well - or, to use a putrid marketing phrase, to define a mission statement. Thank the Gods I have a muse at home with whom I can discuss this stuff: she always inspires me. It's nice to be able to put into words what I'd like to be doing here

10 Stupid Spelling Mistakes To Avoid

April 11th 2009 18:28

Time for a little finger-pointing fun today, methinks. I'm not going to get into that whole "correct spelling and grammar" argument - you know, the one about the language dying. Why not? Well, mostly because it's been done to death a million times, but also because it always degenerates into a personal mud-throwing affair (and there's far too much of that going on already).

Problogger's 'Better Blog' Project

April 10th 2009 09:48
Problogger logo

Problogger is considered the site for people wishing to make a business of blogging. The guy who built it did just that - quite unexpectedly, at first - and continues to make a success of his online business. There's a book, there are talks and conventions and there's free advice online in his blog.

Fun With Grammar

April 7th 2009 23:27

Just for a change, I thought I'd post some amusingly bad advertising. Well, amusing for Grammar Nazis like myself, that is. Enjoy the pics - and read the bit at the bottom.

Character Death And Murder

April 4th 2009 12:06
Grim Reaper

A combination of two things brought this subject to mind: firstly, the utterly pointless, formulaic 'sacrifice' death of Adrian Lester's character in Doomsday and secondly this post by Janice over on her blog.

Editing Aloud

Shout and scream

I don't remember when or where I saw (or heard) this piece of advice, but it's incredibly effective. I was reminded of it yesterday, when I read a paragraph of something I'd written to my partner. I stopped half-way through and had to correct an error that I hadn't noticed even when I'd read the piece several times.

How To Write Better

April 2nd 2009 00:18
Temporally Closed

Quite possibly the scariest of all subjects for a writer is how to write better. Few are the authors who are satisfied with their work: you can be sure that even the greatest novelists of our time spend far too many hours wondering whether their latest tale will be a success, whether their readers will like it and - above all - whether their editor will shred it into tiny little pieces and force them to rewrite the whole thing!
